Oshakan is a historic village in Armenia, located about 20 kilometers southwest of the capital, Yerevan, in the Aragatsotn Province. Known for its rich cultural and religious heritage, Oshakan is one of Armenia's most significant pilgrimage sites, as it houses the tomb of Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of the Armenian alphabet. His contribution to Armenian culture and national identity is profound, as the Armenian script enabled the preservation of Armenian language, literature, and religious texts throughout centuries of shifting political landscapes. The Church of Saint Mesrop Mashtots, built in the 5th century, stands over his tomb and is an architectural treasure in itself. Throughout history, this church has undergone multiple restorations, preserving its historical essence while serving as a site of annual pilgrimages, particularly for Armenian schoolchildren, who come to honor the creator of their alphabet. Beyond the church, Oshakan is also home to various khachkars (Armenian cross-stones), medieval cemeteries, and remnants of early Christian and pre-Christian monuments. Today, Oshakan remains a blend of history and living tradition, where visitors can experience Armenia’s cultural roots and see firsthand the enduring legacy of Mesrop Mashtots. The village is also surrounded by picturesque landscapes, with views of Mount Aragats, adding a natural beauty to this historically rich site.
